Halfway between a sandy beach and the parkland surrounding Palladian stately home Holkham Hall, Downton-esque nineteenth century inn ‘The Vic’ “has gained a consistency in recent years”, offering a “warmth of welcome, good hearty cooking (“lots of local game including venison”) and plenty of style”; bonus points for the “wonderful estate in which to walk it off!”

Down the driveway from the magnificent Palladian-style Holkham Hall, this well-known, shabby chic hotel-pub owned by the estate turns out British comfort food, with some focus on game sourced locally; “good value” for those exploring this bit of the coast.

“A firm favourite when visiting the North Norfolk coast” – a Holkham Estate coastal hotel-pub known for featuring unusual cuts of meat on its menu.

By one of the UK’s most stunning beaches, The Vic – the Holkham Estate’s coastal hotel – is “ideal for families in terms of location”, and “service is great for dogs as well as humans”. Most reports say it’s “perfect in terms of welcome and food” too, but the odd cynic – irked by its prices – feels “the Earl of Leicester is taking his serfs for granted…it’s just a pub serving pub grub. The note on the menu (from the Earl) encourages the diner to try unusual cuts we wouldn’t normally consider. On the menu: pork belly; burger; roast chicken; venison sausages; duck breast!”

For 29 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
