Harden's survey result
Summary
“Interesting art” (from the likes of Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud and Damian Hirst) is par for the course at art dealer Ivor Braka’s foodie getaway – launched in 2011, and no stranger to ‘Top 50’ UK gastropub lists. The stately home sits on a 1,000-acre deer park, with ex-Hix alumni Stuart & Simone Tattersall overseeing a vigorous menu spanning the Gunton’s own venison plus seafood, mussels and crab caught in nearby Cromer. A few reports of “slightly complacent” service of late, but even cynics “could not fault the food and setting”.
Summary
“Set in the deer-filled grounds of a stately home” and owned by Chelsea art dealer Ivor Braka, this much commented-on pub-with-rooms “shows more contemporary art on its walls than the average West End gallery” (Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst, Anthony Caro and co.). Mark Hix alumni Stuart & Simone Tattersall oversee the victuals: mostly “meat and game from local estates” (“some cooked on the open fire”), but the “broad and inventive” menu isn’t just for carnivores. “Top Menu Tip – the whole shared-chicken Sunday Roast is beautifully done and excellent value”.
Summary
“Love the vibe and art” at this “exciting” restaurant-with-rooms, opened in 2011 by Chelsea art dealer Ivor Braka on his country estate, with paintings and sculpture by luminaries from Lucian Freud, Paula Rego and Damien Hirst to Anthony Caro and Sol Le Witt on the walls and in the grounds outside. It’s “definitely a meat-eater’s heaven”, with “superb food” from ex-Mark Hix chef Stuart Tattersall – “most locally sourced, including their own stunning venison from the estate”, and some “cooked over the dining-room fire”.
Summary
This “quirky” and “art-filled (by YBAs no less) but still “informal” operation “manages to combine the best of both pub and restaurant”. Fine local ingredients are cooked with care and flair, the seafood is superb, and the meat cooked on the open fire is spectacular” (not least game from the nearby Gunton Deer Park). “Melt in the mouth” steaks or rib of beef rate mention here.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
