“The perfect pub” according to its local fans – this “lively and busy” indie boozer wins nothing but praise for a food offering that’s “excellent quality for a pub”. “They serve their own brewed beers (exceptional)” and “a brilliant wine list” too (all available as 125ml, 175ml, 250ml, 500ml or 750ml servings).

“Great beer (including from their own craft brewery), an award-winning wine list and refined pub food”: three excuses to visit this gastroboozer from the Gusto Pronto group (even if there were slight quibbles with the rotating cast of chefs this year). In 2022, they opened a wine shop, Vino Gusto, on Hatter Street, offering self-serve wine tasting via an Enomatic machine.

“Dependably interesting food” continues to carve a strong local reputation for this bright, “high quality” gastropub – part of the local Gusto Pronto group which links into the town’s Brewshed brewery.

A “lovely pub-restaurant” where the food is decently rated; more of an attraction, “a great list of wine by the glass” (and the beer isn’t bad either, given its ownership by the local Brewshed brewery).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

We are a pub in the historic heart of Bury St Edmunds offering fresh, seasonal, regional food, an award winning wine list & our own Brewshed ale.

We know that not everyone wants the same thing from a pub. You might want a pint of local real ale at the bar... A bottle of wine and a grazing board on the sofas... A meal in the dining room... A really good coffee and a read of the paper... Take your pick.If real ale is your thing, look no further.

We offer our own Brewshed beers brewed at our craft brewery just down the road.

We're passionate about wine and have created an award winning wine list which offers a selection of old favourites combined with some more unusual and quirky wines. The common theme is that we believe they are all well made wines offering good value for money. Every single one of our wines are available by the glass (except some champagnes).

On the food side, the emphasis is on good quality, seasonal produce and, wherever possible, we source it locally. We love Sunday lunch and offer a great roast - bring the family or meet up with friends and catch up on your week.
We're open from noon until late. So if you're in need of a locally roasted coffee in the afternoon, you know where to come.

Free wi-fi is available throughout the pub.
