“Still blown away with Jan & Stacey’s ability to deliver top-quality food and service” is a typical report on the Bretschneiders’ very focused small restaurant, now in its ninth year. Berlin-born Jan’s “very personal” tasting menu (eight courses for £95 per person, or twelve courses for £150 per person), which is also available in a “wonderful veggie version”, comes “with notes about his childhood that led to the thought process behind the dish”. The couple have also opened the more casual (but still ambitious) Cork & Lobster next door.

“Jan and Stacey are legends” according to fans of the Bretschneider’s small, “friendly” and “relaxed” tasting menu restaurant. “The amazing food is even more impressive when you realise it is created and delivered by only 3 staff. If this was in London it would be hugely acclaimed!”. The 9-course evening menu is £105 per head.

Not enough feedback this year for a formal rating of Jan and Stacey Bretschneider’s acclaimed, small (26-cover) Southbourne venture, which serves by night a no-choice, seven- or nine-course tasting menu. We’ve maintained its listing, however, as our assessment is that it remains one of the more interesting restaurants in the locale.

“The best food in the area by a country mile!” – Jan and Stacey Bretschneider’s small, 26-cover Southbourne venture is very accomplished, and provides a variety of eating options, but mainly focused on a no-choice, nine-course tasting menu. But while fans say “I can’t believe Jan hasn’t got a Michelin star yet”, it doesn’t always hit the right note with folks: “given that they only essentially serve one menu (in either a short or extended form), with no choices, they need to get everything right. However, whilst the chef clearly has talent, the prices are high for the small portions and lack of choice, and we sat feeling we’d stumbled into a glorified dinner party at which we were unwanted guests”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
