Stunning views across Petersham Meadows to the Thames are the highlight of any meal in the dining room of this rather stately Richmond hotel, built in 1865. The cooking is generally competent, if some would say “overpriced”, but has its fans: “we love it for family get-togethers”, while “afternoon tea here is perfect for catching up with friends”.

“Brilliant views over the Thames at the window tables”, from a “unique” vantagepoint overlooking Petersham Meadows, add to the “tranquil” atmosphere at this impressive-looking hotel (built in 1865 by the same architect as Portland Place’s Langham Hotel). On most accounts, “decent” cooking creates “a real experience” (if in a rather old-fashioned mould), but there’s also the odd report of “perfunctory” standards. Top Tip – “a fantastic location for a relaxed afternoon tea”.

“The view from the restaurant is one of the best in London”“the best tables are near the window” where you can enjoy the “splendid setting overlooking the Thames” – from the traditional dining room of this old-fashioned and “romantic” Richmond hotel. Fans (often silver-haired) acclaim its cuisine as “a safe bet”, but a number of meals this year also ended up feeling “pricey” or “perfunctory”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"I usually enjoy going here but this time it wasn't that good. We were placed on the end of a table that would have seated over a dozen and it was anything but intimate. Food was good but nothing exceptional and the service was average. The service charge was 13.5%, an outrageous amount when calculated as £47.86."

"The view of the Thames is terrific, but the food is only average and the service is offhand. The bouillabaise was insipid - and who puts mashed potato into bouillabaise?"

"Starters and main were quite respectable and very well presented (although the chef has a tendency to put "granules" of unknown substances not listed on the menu on almost everything. One was "biscuit that has been coloured green", according to the waitress). However the main courses (this was the "traditional" Sunday lunch) for the most part were very poor, especially considering the fixed £55 (for three courses) price. The lamb and beef options were both poor quality, fatty & gristly meat, and both were on the cold side. The only decent option was the pork belly, which may have been from the regular (not Sunday) menu and thus was of a more modern style. Service was very variable - some waiters were quite rude, including the older chap who took our order ; some were sloppy, including the young male water pourer who regularly splashed water on the table ; others (mostly the women actually) were much more proficient and seemed to know very much what they were doing (including one who dealt very swiftly with a sauce spill). The dining room has very pleasant views - the tables near the windows can get quite hot in the sun, though there are hidden blinds. The clientele is skewed very much to the older members of society, who all look as they have visited many, many times previously."
