The “stunning dining room with spectacular views, high above the Thames” at this grand mid-Victorian hotel in Richmond “retains a fine atmosphere”, and it serves “delicious cakes” at afternoon tea. “Many chefs have been through the kitchen here” and where more serious culinary occasions are concerned, verdicts are split: fans say it is “currently undergoing a renaissance”, but others feel (as they have for years) that “the food is only average and the service likewise”.

“Excellent views over the meadows and Thames” make this dining room of a grand Richmond hotel (built in 1865) “a lovely place for a romantic dinner”. Sunday lunch and afternoon tea are also popular choices. It’s “a bit of a time-capsule”, though, and even if prices have moved with the times, standards generally can be reminiscent of a former, less demanding, era.

Stunning views across Petersham Meadows to the Thames are the highlight of any meal in the dining room of this rather stately Richmond hotel, built in 1865. The cooking is generally competent, if some would say “overpriced”, but has its fans: “we love it for family get-togethers”, while “afternoon tea here is perfect for catching up with friends”.

“Brilliant views over the Thames at the window tables”, from a “unique” vantagepoint overlooking Petersham Meadows, add to the “tranquil” atmosphere at this impressive-looking hotel (built in 1865 by the same architect as Portland Place’s Langham Hotel). On most accounts, “decent” cooking creates “a real experience” (if in a rather old-fashioned mould), but there’s also the odd report of “perfunctory” standards. Top Tip – “a fantastic location for a relaxed afternoon tea”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
