Ratings are up for this pretty boutique hotel dining room close to the river in Richmond, with a “good value” menu from South African-born chef Vanessa Marx, who took over the reins in 2023 (having first arrived in 2021 as an events chef). The modern brasserie menu (steak, catch of the day…) is less aspirational than once it was here, but the format is going down well. (“We ate very well on a fine summer’s evening on the balcony overlooking the Thames”“portion sizes are now much better than previously, and the food is really excellent and good value”, with “lots of vegan dishes… two of them enjoyed without registering that they were in fact vegan!)”.

South African chef, Vanessa Marx has taken the reins (from Steven Edwards) at this attractive dining room – part of a boutique hotel, beautifully situated with a riverside garden in Richmond. Her menu is eclectic with a selection of small and larger plates. But while the reception to it has been a little up-and-down (“exceptional food, let down by a few off-kilter moments…”; “less cohesive than the previous dining experience…”; “expensive…”) its ratings overall are still pretty good all-round.

“An incredible setting overlooking The Thames at Richmond” anchors the appeal of this “relaxing and enjoyable” dining room, with terrace: part of a small boutique hotel set in gardens right by the river. The “competent and consistent” realisation of high-quality dishes wins nothing but praise for cuisine created by chef Steven Edwards (winner of Masterchef: The Professionals a decade ago), which makes it one of this swanky borough’s top culinary venues.

The “exceptional tasting menu you can adapt to as many courses as you want” – from highly rated chef Steven Edwards (who owns etch in Brighton) – can be enjoyed “at a window table overlooking the river”, “on the terrace or in a garden dome”.
