“OK, the ambience is a bit noisy when it’s full, and it can be chilly on a winter’s day”, but the Pinney family’s “no-nonsense and basic” canteen just “goes on and on producing beautiful, honest fish dishes”: a short menu of “top fish cooked in a very simple way so that the flavour of the fish shines through”. “Much of it is from their own boats” – “the oysters are tops (and the other shellfish)” and “their fish pie is the best on the planet”. “You can walk it off by the sea or climbing the castle”.
“A tradition that never disappoints” – the Pinney family’s “basic canteen-like room hardly ever changes, but is still hard to beat in the area” and “consistently does exactly what it knows it’s good at”: “sublime seafood”, including “oysters from their own oyster beds” and “various smoked fish dishes”. “It’s often noisy and can be chilly, but if that’s the price to pay it’s still well worth the visit!”
“A beautiful, simple fish restaurant that sticks religiously to what it knows how to deliver perfectly!” This 50-year-old venture has spawned a local fish and seafood empire but its “no frills”, “school-dining-room feel never changes” and it continues to offer “the freshest of fish, delivered daily from Bill Pinney’s own boats”; plus “excellent smoked fish from Pinney’s of Orford’s own local smokehouse”. “A fish-eater’s paradise”: “you get twice the freshness at half the price, served with double the charm of any fancy London joint!”
Butley Orford Oysterage Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Excellent oyster soup, rich crab cakes (the first time I have wanted more potato in a fishcake!)angels on horseback and griddled squid. Oh - and English (local) wine."
"Very simple seafood, particularly their own smoked fish. Could do with a green vegetable with the main course as well or instead of potatoes, but the side salad was perfect. Quite expensive desserts but they were excellent."
"Strangely lacking an entry in the Good Food Guide this is Worth a Journey to enjoy some serious fish. They own boats, a wharf and their own oyster beds... This is not a smart place, tables are plastic and it is cold but the service is warm and the food hot! Huge portions of smoked eel and prawns to start followed by a superb dover sole - it was actually two fillets so easy to share. Deserts are also great. Prices are mixed - the dover sole was very reasonable at £19,as was the wine the lack of any vegetables with main courses and simple deserts at £6.80 less so. Recommended!"
