Harden's survey result
Summary
This “busy restaurant with a lovely view of the Menai Straits” from its “airy” conservatory – is “a good place for an everyday meal” – “mussels and seafood are not-surprisingly a good place to start your choices” – on a menu that combines Welsh produce in popular dishes from around the world. The Menai Bridge originally opened in 2012 and has been followed by four branches across north Wales, the most recent of which opened last year in Barmouth.
Summary
A “fantastic seashore location, with beautiful views from the wide terrace across the Menai Straits” is the main attraction at this bistro with a “real buzz” – the first in a now four-strong North Wales chain (and with ‘general store’ spin-offs both here, in Menai Bridge and Conwy). “You have to choose wisely to get food to match” and “the seafood is not surprisingly a good place to start”. But its “very wide-ranging all-day menu has something for all tastes” and wins it nominations as “a good place for an everyday meal”.
Summary
There’s no dissent about the “great setting” of this “busy, buzzy” modern waterfront establishment, overlooking the Menai Straits; the food, however, tends not to live up to it, being “competent rather than interesting” (though “vegetarian dishes perform better than fish”). Despite recurrent grumbles, the business opened its fourth North Wales link in September 2023: a baked goods and general store, on Conwy’s High Street, and with a restaurant offering epic views to the castle.
Summary
All reports acknowledge the “great building and position” – a stylish modern structure with “terrific views over the Menai Straits” – at this waterside venue (with branches now in Criccieth and Llandudno) and there’s always a decent crowd here. But some diners feel there’s “always a slight disappointment” about the “very average” nosh: “I felt the accountants are in charge, not the chefs”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
