Very attractively converted from an old farm with barns and a mill, this restaurant-with-rooms a short drive from Ludlow has its sights set high when it comes to the high quality of its cuisine, and Karl Martin’s cooking – awarded a rare four rosettes by the AA – “shows a high degree of skill without confronting diners with too many tastes”. One or two reporters find the experience too costly, but all rate the victuals here as good or better.
“The big investment in all aspects of the operation backed up by a really friendly team is now paying off” at this attractive hotel (converted from ancient barns and a former cider mill) where the dining room feels positively baronial. As well as six-course and nine-course tasting menus, chef Karl Martin also provides a simpler ‘Market Menu’ option.
A short drive from Ludlow, this attractive hotel occupies ancient barns and an old cider mill, and its medieval hall-like dining room offers six- or nine-course menus from chef Karl Martin. All-in-all, it wins praise for “people who really care about what they do, and do it well”.
Old Downton Lodge Restaurant Diner Reviews
"In an area know as a haven for foodies, this is a delight. We went a la carte instead of the tasting menu, but still were offered a few extras which added to the experience; to note too fine wines by the glass, including a 2012 Chateau Musar."
"Imaginative food, well served and in beautifully restored rooms. Lovely garden and very high standard bedrooms.."
