Harden's survey result
Summary
It turns out the ‘infamous cherry blossom’ (their words) at this "stylish" pan-Asian was not inspired by Instagram after all, but, according to its website, by the traditional Chinese Courtyard House of which this splashy venue in the heart of Oxford Street boasts four such areas (each blessed with aforementioned blossom). Fans love it, particularly for the “romantic” potential for an “upscale Asian meal with high-quality classic dishes”. Less starry-eyed folk can feel “you’re paying a lot for the view!” and say “the food is just glorified British/Chinese cuisine”. There’s a wide variety of menus: if you don’t go for the cheaper lunch or two-course evening options, you are quickly into the big bucks.
Summary
Insta-friendly backdrops of interior trees festooned with blossom and desserts served with smoking dry ice help characterise the eventful experience at this “fantastic”-looking three-year-old in Oxford Street’s ‘Now Building’. Inevitably the pan-Asian food is not always centre-stage, but it is rated consistently solidly in our reports and no concerns are noted this year. Top Tip – you can dip your toe in the water, pre-theatre, Saturday lunchtime and all day Sunday with the ‘Taste of Tattu’ menu from £33.50 per person for two courses.
Summary
Considering its prominent location in ‘The Now Building’ on Oxford Street, this glossy two-year-old from an Insta-friendly Manchester-based group inspires surprisingly little feedback. Most is positive, but it’s not without the one or two disappointments, and some ongoing concern about high prices.
Summary
This scene-y Chinese operation from a Manchester-based chain is the signature restaurant of Oxford Street’s ‘The Now Building’ (newly opened near Centre Point, featuring giant digital video screens). It’s an Instagrammer’s dream, but reports are mixed on the culinary front: the “food looks sensational”, but is “overpriced” by a number of accounts and – although it may well find its market – foodies are likely to see it as an “example of how money and pretentions can go a long way”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
