Fans still hail its “totally original cuisine” (“a total surprise to the point of mind-blowing!”) at this “relaxed and laid back” venue at the top end of Portobello Market, but its ratings took a nosedive this year, reflecting the strains of expansion to Southam Street (see also) and the corresponding change of chef from Chris Denny to Greg Clarke. To the fair few who reported a bad trip, the venture can now seem “overhyped and over here, with clever food but no fireworks and too expensive to justify the clamour”. Perhaps with Southam Street’s opening behind them, it may now be on the up?
Just about “the hottest newcomer of the year”: “chef Chris Denny is truly talented, and a name to remember!”. This “wacky, noisy and stimulating”, “NYC-vibe” debutante is a “laid-back”, cooly grungy garage-conversion, on “one of West London’s most interesting streets” (at the top end of Portobello Market). The food is “to die for” – “light but satisfying cooking with brilliant use of herbs and greens”. It’s just “a pity you can’t get in any more”. (In September 2017, they are set to open a second venture nearby: Southam Street.)
108 Garage Restaurant Diner Reviews
"The design of the restaurant is hipster chic and quite nice. The food is good but there is little choice as we only could have a tasting menu (no a la carte) and could only choose one out of 2 main courses. Overall, it's OK but overpriced"
"Twice for lunch and once for dinner. Every time served fascinating and inventive food, with an excellent wine list. Delightful wait staff, too. Will be in my favourites. Have been looking for an excuse to go to the sister restaurant down the road, too. Really excellent addition to our (nearly) local restaurant scene."
"New chef. Food was edible. The best was the grilled pigeon. The staff did not accommodate for my eversion to sour flavors on some of the dishes - a bit disappointing. luckily my husband made up by eating for two or the dish would have goe to waste"
