“If you like pies, beer and wine”, this Young’s pub is – say fans – “a good choice”, especially when you need relatively affordable sustenance in Mayfair. But despite serious investment in recent times – with the addition of an upstairs restaurant and roof terrace – ratings slipped this year (with a couple of reports such as: “not sure what’s happened, but it’s really gone downhill”; or “far too noisy and cramped, and the pies we had read so much about were not as good as M&S!”).

The “focus on home-made British pies” makes this trad Mayfair pub a crowd-pleaser, “tucked away” off Regent Street close to Oxford Circus. From the same stable as the Guinea Grill, it now has a smarter restaurant upstairs, along with a rooftop terrace. Top Menu Tips – “the pastry pies are best for hungry young adult males, while the shepherd’s pie is excellent if you want something lighter”.

“Great home-made pies (in five flavours) and mash to go with a pint of Young’s bitter – what’s not to like?” about this “traditional pub” just off Regent Street, from the same stable as the Guinea Grill. There’s a newish (est. 2020) upstairs restaurant and terrace which is more what you might expect in Mayfair, white tablecloths and all.

“I could have bathed in the sauce smothering the devilled kidneys”, eulogises one poetic fan of this “sparkling pub with excellent food” in poshest Mayfair. It’s a proper pub, too, with “well-kept beer” and a “great selection of pies”. “A pint of Young’s bitter and a great pie takes some beating – and only a hop from Oxford Circus.” Upstairs, there’s a smarter restaurant.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
