Harden's survey result
Summary
“What a delightful spot”, just off Piccadilly Circus (“my favourite place at the moment, both inside and in the courtyard, love the overall vibe”). The food is “simple but well cooked” and comes at a “fair price”, making it “great for pre-theatre” and “an absolute bargain for lunch”, while the classic hotel afternoon tea is served with some style and “always reliable”.
Summary
Sitting in the cute courtyard of this “immaculately kept” newish hotel, you would never dream you were a two-minute stroll from Piccadilly Circus, and – in colder weather – its “quirky modern/traditional conservatory” is also a lovely destination. In keeping with other Firmdale hotels, the food avoids fireworks, but they have an “excellent-value set lunch and pre-theatre menu”, and some would argue it’s “the best place in town for afternoon tea – served on quirky china with hand-stitched white table linen and not at all rushed”.

Summary
“If you can find this hidden-away gem, it is superbly located for Theatreland” – just a short stroll from Piccadilly Circus, yet seemingly miles away, with “a great courtyard for a summer lunch”, and “lovely interior” with “amazing Kit Kemp decor that makes it a particularly great lunch venue”. Judged on its food alone, it can be “average” (and somewhat “let the whole meal down”), but is mostly “solid”; and the “sumptuous afternoon tea in the heart of the West End” is terrific – “somewhere to take both Granny and your hipster cousin”.
For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
