This “longstanding Clapham local fave” – run by three “Nobu refugee” chefs – “keeps knocking out very good-to-exceptional sushi and sashimi” after almost 25 years (although some of the cooked dishes are less successful). “Service is local, friendly and charming but can seem overrun”, and the “ambience is Nobu-meets-nightclub”.

This “modern Japanese” with a “clubby and bouncy vibe” has been a hit on Clapham High Street since three former Nobu chefs opened it 23 years ago, and it remains a “very popular” destination for cocktails and fusion bites. Always “a slightly idiosyncratic” place – this issue was more to the fore this year with incidents of “erratic” or “uncoordinated” service, and one or two fears that the “huge” menu is being “dumbed down”.

“Excellent modern Japanese food with a twist” has given this Clapham local a cutting-edge vibe that has barely faltered since its launch in 2001 by a trio of ex-Nobu chefs. Top Menu Tips – “perfect black cod (gin dara) and the best scallops ever: presented flaming in a sea shell with enoki mushrooms in a creamy chilli sauce with the crunch of tobiko. Sublime!”

With its “great selection of fresh, authentic and interesting Japanese fusion cuisine”, this high-grade local in Clapham continues to wow reporters, even though what was super-innovative when it was launched 21 years ago by a trio of ex-Nobu chefs is now found all over London. “It’s great to have an off-West End restaurant with reasonable prices and top-quality food.” “Every year it’s my favourite – nothing in London can compare with the grilled scallops and black cod washed down with an Electric Kamikaze buzz-button cocktail!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
