Harden's says

The PR for this newly-relaunched King’s Road pub says it’s a ‘much-loved institution’, but we hadn’t heard of it before its mid-2021 relaunch. Still, it’s got a prime Chelsea location; it’s got the heritage and a fine restored interior (dating from 1838); and it’s got the backing with investors led by Dominic Jacobs of The Running Horse Mayfair, and investors including Jyotin, Karam & Sunaina Sethi, of JKS Restaurants. The culinary team has splendid form too – Kitchen Table’s James Knappett is collaborating with chef Alex Harper who has The Ledbury and The Harwood Arms on his CV.

In terms of delivering “really decent” food on the King’s Road (a rarity) and “an amazing Sunday roast”, the three-year-old revamp of this “beautiful” early Victorian Chelsea pub must be accounted a success, and it becomes “BUSY!”. If the backers were not JKS Restaurants in partnership with Kitchen Table’s James Knappett one would say ‘job done’, but by the standards of such megastar restaurateurs, the result is good – not outstanding.

“When all that wealth and beauty on the King’s Road become too much”, this “tastefully restored” old pub (built in 1838) is something of an antidote. It wins praise all round for its “attentive” service and “traditional British fare” that’s “on the button and carefully presented”. If there’s any reservation, it’s that it doesn’t dazzle quite as much as its restaurant royalty backing might lead you to hope (the owners of JKS Restaurants, with food overseen by Kitchen Table’s James Knappett). Top Menu Tip – “prawn cocktail and skinny chips with a side order of hot sauce”.

Since it was “gussied up” last year, this “beautiful and comfortable” old Chelsea pub (built in 1838) hasn’t made waves, despite a PR push and a laundry list of influential backers (including the owners of JKS Restaurants and Kitchen Table’s James Knappett). Its slick gastropub fare can be “excellent”, but is not reliably so; service sometimes strikes an “entitled” note; and it can appear “sad to see an institutional Chelsea boozer become a self-conscious eatery”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
