Harden's survey result
Summary
This “beautiful space” combines a large and unusually attractive Art Deco-style brasserie, with – outside its front door – what is claimed to be the ‘longest Champagne bar in Europe’, overlooking the Eurostar tracks (where afternoon tea with fizz is offered). It’s certainly “convenient for business and meeting people” and some – perhaps fans of ‘Brief Encounter’ – also find it “romantic”. The brasserie fare won’t distract you from your liaison – a fair mid view is that it’s “nice enough, but nothing very special for the price”.
Summary
With its gracious styling, this handsome brasserie (with a neighbouring Champagne bar overlooking the Eurostar tracks) is extremely comfortable and its location – and all-day service from early morning onwards – certainly means “it’s a very convenient place for folk from around the country to meet up”. But while it is tipped for business, breakfast and afternoon tea, it’s hard to give it a ringing endorsement: to some diners, it feels like “everything is average, apart from the price…”
Summary
“Better than anything the Gare du Nord can offer (although perhaps that’s not saying much!)” – this “beautiful” operation overlooking the Eurostar tracks comprises a “comfortable and well-spaced”, large interior with a stylish concourse bar (Europe’s longest, apparently) whose seating runs along the platforms from on high (the latter closing in summer 2022 for a major upgrade and a new focus on its extensive Champagne range of bottles and magnums). The brasserie fare (served seven days a week from breakfast) is sometimes criticised for being “unimaginative”, but one or two reports felt it had “stepped up a gear” this year, with recommendations as a business or romantic rendezvous; or for its luxurious afternoon tea. It’s certainly “convenient” (and, in the bar, “you can’t beat it for a view of the trains”).
Summary
Afternoon tea (“try Champagne as well as tea!”) is a highlight at this stylishly appointed brasserie inside St Pancras Station, whose popular exterior bar overlooks the Eurostar tracks. The food doesn’t always impress everyone (“like a trip back to the days of British Rail catering”) but most reports this year were uniformly favourable.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
