“If you nab a window table, you get great views” of the Thames, Tower Bridge and City at this “clean-lined, sharp and professional” fish brasserie at the foot of a Wapping development (sibling to a long-standing original, in Ongar). A superb all-rounder, it deserves to be (even) better known, given its mix of “expertly prepared” fish (“fresh ingredients handled with a light touch and the confidence not to over-egg things”), “very accommodating and unobtrusive service” and “impressive” location.
“The view of Tower Bridge and The Shard is stunning” from this Wapping brasserie (offshoot from the long-established Ongar original), which has a “wonderful location by the Thames”. “They do serve meat, but the fish or seafood is the way to go” – “it’s exceptional, very fresh and well-presented”.
“A fantastic location with brilliant views over towards Tower Bridge”, isn’t the only reason this Wapping venue is “always busy”: its fish and seafood is “always superb” too. Sibling to a well-established Ongar venture, it’s “generally filled with Essex likely lads and their molls”.
“Well worth a visit even though it’s a bit off the beaten track” – this Wapping offshoot of a long-established Essex business “has got it all” – “a wide selection of beautiful fish” (“well cooked, but with nothing too clever”), “attentive staff”, and “impressive views” of Tower Bridge and the Thames.
Smith's Wapping Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Despite a crowded pre-Christmas evening, we were found an alternative table away from a big noisy crowd. Service was excellent and the food as always was generous and delicious with some fine Sancerre to drink with the fish."
"What a surprise, to find such a professionally-run restaurant with such good food and at modest prices, with such a stunning view. A Parmesan-crusted fillet of hake on a Chablis sauce, on the set lunch menu, was one of the best fish dishes we ate this year. Portions are generous: east end rather than fine dining. Wine is impressive, too: an excellent dry Riesling from the Nahe was £26. Warm and attentive service. For us, a real find."
"Many restaurants could learn from the slick service at Smith's. Staff are always pleasantly engaging and many have been here for years. The stars of course are the splendid fish dishes. All executed with stlye and panache and above all flavour. The bottom end of a very good wine list certainly surprised us with quality. Do not miss out on the puddings which occasionally will put your main course to shame."
