Harden's says

Opening in May 2024 in the former premises of Mistral, an all-day café, bar, restaurant and bottleshop from chef Roberta Hall-McCarron – next door to her more formal flagship, The Little Chartroom. Named after a village in Argyll and Bute, it allows Roberta and her husband Shaun to offer breakfast and brunch, as they did before the pandemic.

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

Do you think it deserves to be better known?

Write a quick review now using our restaurant diary service. That way it might catch our attention. Next survey, you can transfer your diary entry into our survey system. Everyone who contributes 5 or more reviews in our survey will qualify for a free guide.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Ambience marked down due to the rowdy ladies next to us. Otherwise, excellent range of small plates. But, I wonder, what is this place trying to be? A wine bar? A small plates restaurant? Not sure"

"Very enticing small plates menu - everything looked good. But you need to be careful, as a lot have a bread with them. However, everything we had was top notch - especially the heritage tomatoes, and the hash brown with xo sauce. Informal 'wine bar' atmosphere. Deserves to succeed"

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Times

Charlotte Ivers headed to Leith, her favourite part of Edinburgh, to a new venture from Roberta Hall-McCarron and the team behind the popular Little Chartroom.

“It’s next door, and basically identical. The difference is there if you squint: it’s a bit less formal, a bit less fancy. But from the outside you’d be forgiven for not noticing Ardfern even existed, walking straight past to its famous older brother.”

The service – from Ellen – was terrific, and Charlotte was impressed by the brevity of the menu, which “feels delightfully chic. I like a short menu. It implies confidence, perhaps even arrogance. ‘We know what’s good for you,’ it seems to say. At Ardfern, they definitely do.”
