For “well-priced, authentic tapas and Spanish wines” (they also offer sherries from the barrel), you’d travel far to better the flagship of the 44 group, also with outposts in Penarth and Clifton Village, Bristol. Those who haven’t been for a while report it “has much improved of late”, with “swish service” and “beautifully presented” food – no wonder the atmospheric, cellar-like space is “extremely popular” nowadays.

This “lively spot” in the shadow of the Principality Stadium offers “great service” and a “good choice of tapas and wines”“a lot of places promise ‘tapas’, but Bar 44 delivers authentic dishes and an excellent sherry list” (including three served directly from the barrel). It’s the flagship of the 44 group of Spanish-inspired venues, founded 22 years ago by siblings Owen, Tom & Natalie Morgan.

Hispanophile foodies Tom & Owen Morgan’s city centre tapas bar, in the shadow of the Principality Stadium, serves an “interesting range of wines and sherries” and an “amazing Spanish Sunday lunch” (among other meals). The brothers launched their business two decades ago in Cowbridge, and now have venues in Penarth and Bristol.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Tapas menu with swish service and good wine. Every dish beautifully presented. I especially enjoyed the Artichoke almond Romesco truffled manchego. "
