Harden's survey result
“Very popular (but consequently sometimes very noisy)” city-centre Spaniard, part of a local chain (which now extends to Bristol), that wins praise for its “top tapas” and wide selection of wines and sherries. On the downside, some reporters “prefer the Cowbridge original”.
Some feel it’s “not as good as its Cowbridge sibling”, but this “busy Spaniard” in the city-centre nevertheless wins praise for its “interesting selection of authentic tapas, different Spanish wines and large range of sherries”.
“A gem among the soulless, huge chain restaurants in the centre of Cardiff!” This latest two-year-old outlet of a small indie group (with branches in Cowbridge and Penarth) serves “very good Spanish tapas (though the helpings are really like the larger ‘raciones’)” and feels like “somewhere with personality”.
The Bar 44 Group of Tapas Bars are all slightly different with their own unique menus and ambience. There is, however, one common theme which runs through them all....the passion and desire to bring the very best food, drink and hospitality from modern Spain to the heart of South Wales.
Tapas y Copas (tapas and drinks) is what we do. Using the finest Spanish produce known to man, coupled with the best local produce we are striving to produce the finest tapas, and our passion with Spain knows no bounds!
We have won several awards for both food and drink, just last year we won Cardiff Life Magazine Restaurant of the year as well as being The Good Food Guide Reader’s Restaurant of the year.
Almost everything we serve is made on the premises, or traditionally cured and aged in Spain and carved or cut by ourselves for our customers’ pleasure. Our food is complemented by a superb array of drinks. As much effort and passion go into sourcing and creating our drinks and extensive cocktail list with a distinct Spanish flavour, as it does our food.

Bar 44 Cardiff Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Very busy retaurant, and because of the very low windows, too noisy for me. The meals are not quite so interesting as they used to be - dumbed down Spanish. We now secrete our own bread - every order of bread is accompanied by a dish of olive oil, and there fore is more expensive, when all we want is more bread."
