“You wonder what’s in store when you driving up to The Gallivant” – built in the 1960s as a beachfront motel by Camber Sands – but “you enter an oasis of calm, with a light and airy restaurant” serving “outstanding and interesting food” from MasterChef contestant Nico Fitzgerald. The venue operates as a wellness retreat, whose “friendly and knowledgeable team” provide a “truly relaxed environment”.

An “unprepossessing exterior” – the legacy of its 1960s origins as a motel – “belies a great experience” at this beachside venue, where you can feast on chef Jamie Guy’s “delicious, perfectly cooked, fresh, locally sourced fish and seafood” and other regional produce.

Slightly up-and-down reports this year – but mostly the former – on this well-known beachside destination: a former 1960s motel that’s been converted into a stylish B&B. Wood-grilled turbot or steak to share are the headline features of Jamie Guy’s sensibly priced and interesting menu, which puts a strong emphasis on sustainability.

“A wonderful beachside location” is a key selling point at this former 1960s motel: nowadays a hip B&B serving an “intelligent” menu of locally sourced fare. The September 2019 arrival of chef Jamie Guy may see it develop further.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
