Summary

Open in mid September 2025, this exciting newcomer from Brazilian-born chef Rafael Cagali and his Essex-born partner, Charlie Lee (of Da Terra in Bethnal Green, see also) has the potential to be one of the bigger culinary hits in the area of recent times. Maré, means ‘tide’ in Italian, and is pitched between the ambitions of Da Terra and Elis (his less ambitious venue next door). Cagali-protégé, Ewan Waller is head chef, presiding over a menu of small bites, small plates, mains, sharers and desserts.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
