Over 50 years in the business, the Cooney family’s beloved local institution is “still of a high standard” by common accord, and you’ll still have to wait patiently in line for its superior fish ‘n’ chips – then protect them from the gulls on the beach (if you’d rather sit, try their spin-off, the Golden Galleon).
Run by the Cooney family since 1967, and with staff almost as long-serving, this is a “venerable institution and very popular”; expect to queue and “eat on the beach” amid ravenous gulls (their sibling restaurant, the Golden Galleon, has an upstairs dining room).
“The beach is your dining room” (“fighting off the gulls whilst eating adds to the experience”) and the fish ’n’ chips are “very fresh” at this veteran family-run fixture.
“The reason I go to Aldeburgh – you will not get better fish ’n’ chips anywhere” (“the batter is so light” and “the chips are perfection”). Queues are par for the course, but “the people in line smile as they know what a treat that they have in store”.
