“A truly tremendous rural location that’s stylish but not pretentious” – this gorgeous mock-Tudor timber building was originally built in France in 1878, and sits now in a leafy deer park on the Woburn Estate. Phil Fanning has been in the kitchen here since 2010 and owned the place since 2014, and produces “a totally wonderful dining experience”. Choose between a four-course meal for £80 per person or a six-course option at £121 per person – “imaginative, flavoursome dishes served with efficiency and courtesy that always create a special experience”. And “the bill, albeit eye watering, is not as exorbitant as many of the others in this class”. “Wake up Michelin and give him his star back soon!”. Afternoon tea is another here, at £70 per person.

4. Birch
British, Modern restaurant in Woburn
20 Newport Rd - MK17
2024 Review: “All food pubs should be like this!” – according to fans of this “perfect pit stop” on the outskirts of town. “You can’t fault the intent or enthusiasm of the service and the food, if unadventurous, is very decent”.
5. The Pheasant at Keyston
British, Modern restaurant in Keyston
Loop Rd - PE28
“A nice old thatched pub just off the A14 with a considerable history of offering fine food and drink to locals and travellers alike”. Most feedback is positive, but the odd “inconsistent” or “disappointing” report this year dragged down its ratings average – perhaps the arrival of new landlord Stevie Norman a couple of years ago will steady the ship: he first worked here as a 17-year-old catering college student before spending 20 years at the highly rated Old Bridge Hotel in Huntingdon.
6. Eileen’s
British, Modern restaurant in Ampthill
86a Dunstable Street - MK45
“Fascinating dishes served with enthusiasm” make a meal at this small tasting menu-only restaurant on the edge of town “a great experience”. Steven Barringer is a “passionate chef” heading a young team “who clearly care” and he takes the time to chat to his guests, while his cooking is both “interesting and subtle”, in particular the “superb fish dishes” and “amazing desserts”.
