Featured Brampton Restaurants
1. Pentonbridge Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Penton
B6318 - CA6
You’re not far from the Scottish border at Gerald & Margo Smith’s inviting Cumbrian inn, which has been sensitively updated into a stylish contemporary venue with nine bedrooms. Very impressively, the property has operated without the use of fossil fuels for cooking or heating since they took over in 2017, with a biomass boiler and 240 ground-mounted solar panels powering the property. Local sourcing is boosted by their own gardens at Netherby Hall and Chris Archer’s cuisine is exceptional, with the main event being an eight course menu for £130 per person, whose composition is a masterpiece in concision. Typical – Canapés; Cheddar, Onion, Ale; Shorthorn “Tartare”; North Sea Halibut; Rare Breed Pork; Earl Grey Tea & Lemon; Thomlinson’s Farm Rhubarb; Petit Fours.
2. The Cedar Tree, Farlam Hall
British, Traditional restaurant in Brampton
“Chef Hrishikesh Desai is so clever with tastes” at this fine dining room set – just seven miles from Hadrian’s Wall – in a remote northerly corner of Cumbria. A Relais & Château property with origins dating back to the fifteenth century, the “grandeur of the dining room” is considered by some diners as “a little excessive compared to the rest of the experience… perhaps that’s the original architect’s fault!”. Service, meanwhile, is “excellent”. There is a simpler ‘Escape’ menu for £100 per person early in the week, with the ‘Journey’ menu always available at £130 per person – “maybe the food feels a little more Michelinny-sanitised than it needs to be but it’s highly accomplished”. Want something simpler? – head to ‘Bistro Enkel’.
3. Alexandros Greek Restaurant and Deli
Greek restaurant in Carlisle
68 Warwick Road - CA1
“A well-established, family Greek venue that never disappoints” – fans of Aris & Sarah Pathanoglou’s well-established restaurant and deli praise a “charming neighbourhood place” that provides one of the city’s bright culinary sparks. “The food is very tasty with lots of traditional Greek options, portions are fantastic and well presented. The decor has a Greek feel to it and the staff are friendly and attentive”. It’s easy on the wallet, too.
4. The Kirkstyle Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Slaggyford
“Out of the way but well worth an overnight stay” – this 18th-century inn with four bedrooms is set in the North Pennines and was taken over and refurbished by industry veteran Nick Parkinson in 2023. It’s more a restaurant with a bar than it is a boozer. Chef Connor Wilson uses classic cooking techniques to produce an à la carte menu as well as (in the evening) a ten-course tasting menu for £105 per person – a “great selection with the accent on local sourcing”. Top Tip – “unbelievable wine list, a huge selection and some real bargains”.
