Featured Brampton Restaurants
1. Pentonbridge Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Penton
B6318 - CA6
“Never has a restaurant so very far exceeded my expectations!” In 2017, Gerald & Margo Smith revamped this Cumbrian inn and it has gone from strength to strength despite its “middle of nowhere” location (“a crossroads miles from anywhere, where the only thing nearby is the Scottish border”). A “small” dining room plays host to Chris Archer’s well-accoldaded cuisine, which at dinner can either be enjoyed over four courses (for £80 per person) or eight courses (for £125 per person). Of the latter, one seasoned diner notes: “Across all the many dishes, there was not one single step mis-taken or bum note: everything was perfectly conceived and perfectly executed. I was blown away. They’ve really thought about every aspect of the experience, and – for me – quite simply got it just right”. Top Menu Tip – “A hefty slice of Dunblane Highland-X-Angus wagyu fillet was one of the best tasting bits of fillet steak I can remember, and was not overwhelmed by the accompaniments: wild garlic, a large morel stuffed with wagyu trimmings, white asparagus, and a superb, utterly classic sauce poivrade (and excellent mash)”.
2. Alexandros Greek Restaurant and Deli
Greek restaurant in Carlisle
68 Warwick Road - CA1
“Greek food as it should be done” (tarama, tzatziki, souvlaki but also more ambitious fare) ensures that, some two decades after opening, this much-loved restaurant and deli remains “buzzing” at absolutely all times of the week. Ably helmed by owners Aris & Sarah Pathanoglou, this is the definition of a family affair, with son Marios serving as trainee chef, and his “exceptionally friendly” brother Stas presiding over FOH.
3. The Cedar Tree, Farlam Hall
British, Traditional restaurant in Brampton
“Simply the best meal we have enjoyed for a long time… beautifully prepared… expertly presented… flawless” – Hrishikesh Desai is cooking up a storm at this plush but remote Relais & Chateaux hotel in northern Cumbria, just seven miles from Hadrian’s Wall. One meal in this “almost ridiculously high-ceilinged formal dining room” risked falling flat this year, although the diner in question still marked the food as “good”. More common are adulatory reports: “all we ate was – and I really need to stress this – superb. Not a single misstep and each dish nicely conceived and perfectly executed, with the real wows coming with the bite-sized first courses”. Many dishes involve “a super display of technique and fiddliness but are very rewarding to eat too” (“a remarkable hollow cookie-cum-tuile spider’s web astonished with its dexterity… and sympathy for the person who had to carefully pipe an excellent duck liver parfait into all its hollows!”; “an excellent scallop was perfectly cooked, and served intriguingly with a cucumber sauce, and on the side, a ‘cannelloni’ made of wafer-thin slices of raw scallop filled with a tartare of cured scallop”). Overall it’s a “well-composed tasting menu of six bite-size courses, five real courses, plus a pre-dessert for £120”. “Gosh it was a good”.
