Harden's survey result
After over a decade in action, this “atmospheric” gastropub just on the fringes of the town centre “continues to produce some of the most innovative food” in these parts: “interesting ingredients are used to create balanced and intriguing flavours in dishes clearly made with love and care”. Expansion may be afoot, as owner David Nicholson recently submitted plans for a new kitchen and two new dining areas.
“The most innovative restaurant for miles around”, say fans of this acclaimed pub conversion on the edge of town, which has built a formidable reputation since it opened more than 10 years ago. But while most reports are of “beautifully presented and well-executed” cuisine, ratings are sapped slightly by reports of dishes that “try too hard”, or “read well on the menu, but don’t meet expectations”. Top Tip: “the excellent and very reasonably priced lunch menu”.
Acclaimed chef Ollie Moore left for adventures new in July 2016, to be replaced by John Marsden-Jones; by most accounts the “change of chef has made little difference” to the “genuinely surprising and innovative” food on offer at this “very welcoming” edge-of-town pub.
“Always interesting food, without being over-fussy or pretentious” achieves consistently above-average ratings for this acclaimed pub conversion, on the outskirts of the city-centre.
The Black Rat Restaurant Diner Reviews
"This chef is on the ball. Excellent service wanes a little as customer numbers rise. Dining room superficially atmospheric but it's all faux beams."
"Sunday lunch, lovely food with interesting ingredients, balanced and interesting flavours and clearly made with love and care."
