Harden's survey result
“Sitting on the verandah”, enjoying “a good-value lunch on a summer’s day overlooking the park” is particularly enjoyable at HFW’s Winchester outpost, which benefits from its leafy setting, in Abbey Mill Gardens. Its “unmessed-about” cuisine is most praised for a family day out, and even if “some dishes can be less-than-spectacular”, most reports this year judge results as good overall.
An “impressive and interesting mill conversion” (“a bit noisy, though”) – Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s well-known operation puts in a mixed performance. It’s praised for its use of “good ingredients”, but “the food combinations can be a bit strange”, preparation “can lack attention to detail” and “service is poor at times”.
HFW’s attractive but “noisy” mill conversion continues to be a “variable” spot; “the ingredients are normally excellent”, but are ill-served by “sometimes strange” combinations, and “service needs improving” too.
“It’s Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall personified!” – “noisy”, “casual”, but all about “interesting (local) food” – say fans of his venture, in a striking mill near the cathedral. Some reviews are more reserved: “I found it variable: strange, imaginative combinations in dishes, but made with no finesse”.
