“The garden’s a joy in summer” at the original HdV, founded 25 years ago in a gorgeous Georgian house – but there’s a persistent feeling that it fails to live up to its attractive setting or extensive cellar, with diners too often “disappointed” by their bistro fare. The chain, which now numbers 19 boutique hotels, has been sold twice in the last 10 years.
“Whilst the elegant dining room continues to impress”, and the cellar remains a strong point, both “food and service can be hit and miss” at this attractive Georgian red-brick – the first link in the HdV chain; perennially up and down, when it comes to a decent meal it’s one “for risk-takers only”.
The original HdV maintains its consistency… for inconsistency; while fans this year praised its “wonderful” rooms, “exemplary” wines and food “SO much better than expected”, cynics felt the victuals “just didn’t come up to standard”, and service was also very “hit and miss”.
HdV’s original outpost continues to put in an up-and-down performance – even fans concede that service is still a “bit hit and miss”, and reports on the food are likewise mixed; one constant as you might hope – some good finds on the wine list.
