“What a delight” – a “special dining experience” in Drove Orchards from Eric Snaith of Titchwell Manor fame, where you can either eat in or cart it away to enjoy amid the apple trees. The main event is “crisp, perfectly fried fish” ’n’ chips, and the “lunch and early-bird specials are excellent value”. There’s now a single spin-off in Holt, the chef having closed a five-year-old branch in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, in July 2024, with the intention to redirect his focus back on Norfolk.

Titchwell Manor chef Eric Snaith’s mini-chain (also with branches in Holt and St Ives) is set on an apple orchard with a popular farm shop; “lovely large pieces of fresh fish” feature in their standard chippie and more non-trad fare “and they can do the batter gluten-free!” NB – “There’s not always much atmosphere here, so maybe best to take them home” (or picnic in the orchard if you can’t wait that long).

This “quintessential fish ’n’ chip experience” – set in a working apple orchard with farm shop – was opened by Eric Snaith of nearby family-owned Titchwell Manor hotel in 2015, and has since been followed by branches in Holt and St Ives as well as a pizza yurt. The standard chippie offerings are all “excellent”, but “it’s well worth trying some of the more non-traditional options”, such as crispy cod in chilli salt with black garlic mayo or spinach and halloumi arancini.

A “perfect way to end a day at the beach”; “always nicely cooked fish ’n’ chips”“I especially like the crispy cod nuggets for the spot-on ratio of batter to fish” – are the hallmark of Eric Snaith’s “good-value staple with varied menu”, set in the ground of Drove Orchards, with its working apple orchard and indie shops. You’ll also find sibling chippies in Holt and St Ives.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
