Known for its “beautiful fresh fish fried in matzo meal” – much lighter than traditional batter – this veteran West Hampstead chippy is “always full of regulars”, many of whom suggest that “the fish ’n’ chips are the best ever” here. “The dining room has been revamped during lockdown – much needed!”

“Delicious fresh fish”, “battered or crumbed in matzo meal”, and “friendly” service make this classic West Hampstead chippy stand out from the crowd. Even regulars who’ve “been coming for years” point out that “the restaurant could do with a makeover”… but we’ve been saying that for nearly three decades now, so are not exactly holding our breath!

“Fish ’n’ chips the way it should be!” – this classic West Hampstead chippy is reckoned by fans to be “still the best in the northwest”. Nobody disputes that the fish is “fantastic”, “but the restaurant needs redoing” (as it has done for decades) – “much better for take-away”. Top Tip: choose matzo meal over batter.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
