"We are delighted to have the opportunity to pick up where Rick and Jill Stein have left off, taking over this wonderful property in Porthleven. We are looking forward to working with Trevor Osborne, the owner of Porthleven Harbour & Dock Company, to continue to grow Porthleven as a destination and develop a restaurant that warmly welcomes both locals and visitors through its doors. We're looking forward to sharing details of this exciting new venture in due course.'
Harden's survey result
“A lovely harbourside location”, plus a “glossy and glamorous” interior – created from a former warehouse – help win a very high level of feedback for this celebrity-branded fish and seafood restaurant; and “when all is on form, this branch of the Stein empire is one of the better ones”, delivering on the promise of “excellent local fish, perfectly cooked” that the name leads you to expect. Some misfires are reported (“starter was gritty and main slathered in buttery sauce”), but mostly it earns a good rep. As one regular notes: “food and service is somewhat dependent on what you choose and which waiter or waitress you get: results can be very good, if not cheap, and service can be rather disinterested and impersonal, or friendly and efficient”.
“With its lovely location, overlooking the harbour in a nicely refurbished old warehouse, the Porthleven Stein has more charm and character than the nearby Falmouth branch” and there’s “a great buzz about the place”. When it comes to the range of fish and seafood, reports are generally upbeat (with some “exceptionally good” meals noted), but overall food scores are middling with gripes about high prices in particular. Service likewise seemed more “hit ’n’ miss” this year (“either efficient and friendly or forgetful and impersonal”).
Many fans do recommend the “fabulous” fish and seafood at this three-year-old spin-off from the Stein empire. “Ridiculous prices” are a turnoff for quite a few more sceptical reporters however, and the overall verdict is that the food is “well-prepared, but not a wow”.
“The food is not five star, like the original Seafood Restaurant, but then it doesn’t pretend to be”, at this two-year-old outpost of the Stein empire – good cooking, with twists, using excellent local produce from the sea. “This one wins over his Padstow HQ in at least one way – it looks over the wonderful harbour rather than a car park!”
