“Such a lovely setting” (a Grade II-listed shabby-chic hotel) and a “wonderful surrounding area” – the Chew Valley, just south of Brizzle – are hard to beat, but fans claim that there’s “food and service to match” at this venture, boasting a “true provenance of all-local ingredients” (much sourced from the “beautiful kitchen garden”). “Hope the extension of the chain doesn’t result in a loss of focus” (it’s now seven-strong and counting).

Part of the growing national chain – this “very accommodating”, shabby-chic country-house hotel in a Grade II-listed Mendips mansion serves “delicious, locally-sourced food”. But it’s the setting which really elevates it above the average: “wonderful views across the fields (and sometimes even deer)”, “lovely gardens”, “a conservatory to dine in and terrific ambience”.

The shabby-chic chain’s “rather grand yet very relaxed” Somerset outpost occupies a “wonderful” Grade II-listed country house. Fans say they’ve found the “perfect recipe for success”: “great staff”, superior rooms and “brilliant locally sourced” food plus wine that’s “very reasonably priced” (not forgetting a “classic” afternoon tea).

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
