“Amazing that one chef can produce such high-quality and varied food” say fans of Kevin & Jackie Margeolles’s former coaching inn on the north Norfolk coast where “glorious cooking from Kevin is superbly served by his wife”, either from the three-course à la carte for £80 per person or the more extensive tasting menu for £105 per person. “A lovely place to stay and enjoy great food in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere” – it has a very dedicated fan club amongst our reporters, a couple of whom report their best meal of the year here.

This “Norfolk gem”, a former coaching inn on the north coast, is well-known for chef-patron Kevin Margeolles’s “fantastic, precise and experimental cooking”, “produced with absolute dedication”, while his wife “Jackie is tireless at front of house”. It’s undoubtedly “expensive but worth it”, with “comfortable, very well equipped rooms for an overnight stay” as well.

Hosts Kevin & Jackie Mangeolles “are so special and their welcome is always the warmest”, while “lots of local food/suppliers” benefit from “the owner’s obvious skills”. Top Tip – “the rooms (both upstairs and in the Cottage next door) are a cut above most r-with-r establishments”.

“There are so many good places in north Norfolk, but The Neptune is definitely a favourite”“Kevin and Jacqui (Mangeolle) never rest on their laurels” and “keep serving the tastiest food in a really intimate, friendly setting” at this “real treat” of a restaurant-with-rooms, occupying a former coaching inn. It's “all too rare to find this combination of exquisite food (buoyed by local catch and game) coupled with friendly and efficient service”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
