“Still the best restaurant in Norwich” say fans of Roger Hickman’s long-established fine dining destination, whose fanclub is smaller nowadays than that of nearby Benedicts, but overall scored more highly last year. The level of cost here is a tad higher, and the approach more in the vein of traditional fine dining. “A new private dining room has been opened last year, which is stunning, and such an investment shows a real confidence from Roger H, who pleasingly is pretty much always in evidence at every service”.

“If anything the food and service have upped a gear here over the past 12 months, perhaps in response to increased local competition?” Roger Hickman’s ‘fine dining establishment’ is, according to its fans “still the best fine dining in town”, with very assured cooking and service that’s “efficient without being too formal”. It occupies the premises which traded for many years as Adlards (where Roger was head chef, before taking it over himself), and so the site has quite a history as the top venue locally.

Roger Hickman’s “quality, flavour and creativity” have only one serious rival in the town and it’s a coin flip between this ‘fine dining establishment’ and the less buttoned-down Benedicts as to who takes the town’s culinary crown. For a more august occasion, the plusher interior here would suit some tastes, and its matched with service that’s “charming but formal enough”.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
