Matthew Bearshall’s bistro with five rooms is “a wonderful place with interesting, skilled cooking and seasonal, locally sourced ingredients”. There remains the odd sceptic for whom it’s lost some impetus since the launch of nearby spin-off Wilder, with its surprise 8-course tasting menus, but that’s not reflected in its high overall marks.
It’s “always enjoyable to eat” at Matthew Beardshall’s “basic and modern” bistro-with-three-rooms, where the food “makes good use of local ingredients” and is “spot-on for flavour and balance, with inventive combinations you’d expect in a higher-end establishment”. But, as it celebrates a decade in business, it is arguable that the “interesting cooking has now moved to (its new spin-off) Wilder, across the road” – a buzzy room dedicated to offering an eight-course blind tasting menus on Wednesday to Saturday nights.
Matthew Beardshall oversees “consistently innovative cooking using excellent ingredients” at this petite restaurant-with-rooms, which is “now doing tapas” too; “service occasionally wobbles, but it’s a fine local” nonetheless.
A diminutive restaurant-with-rooms that's “trying very hard” and mostly succeeding, owing to Matthew Beardshall's “good ideas and ingredients” (including the eponymous one); they're “now doing tapas too”.
