Harden's survey result
Summary
“A tiny marvel in Margate” with “tables outside to extend it in better weather”. “If you like fish in all its various incarnations, then please please visit! At first glance it looks slightly crammed in… that’s because it is!… it’s a small building and they clearly need to fit as many tables in as they can”. But fans say that “rather than being off-putting, this just adds to its charm”. “Fabulous locally caught super-fresh fish is served alongside the most delicious vegetables and herbs ever: who knew courgette could taste like that?!” “Staff competently and charmingly squeeze their way through to deliver dishes that vary seasonally”. “The freshest of fish dishes are the best… kept simple and treated with respect. How they get that out of the tiny kitchen is amazing!”
Summary
“Stunning seafood within walking distance of the Turner Contemporary gallery and Margate seafront” has won fame for Lee Coad’s “tiny” sibling venue to Dory, that he opened in 2017 with his wife Charlotte Forsdike and chef Rob Cooper. “Gorgeous fresh fish is served in a very relaxed dining space”: “a café-like setting that’s enjoyable if not special”. “Service is fabulous too”, helping to account for why this is nowadays the most commented-on venue in town in our annual diners’ poll and “booking is essential” (“having finally landed a table, the memory of the roasted turbot skin will remain with me for a very long time!”)
Summary
“Margate’s tiny but mighty gem”. “I have never tasted seafood quite like this”, say admirers of Lee Coad & Charlotte Forsdike’s “charming café-like” spot, where “local fish and seafood are the keynotes, beautifully cooked, often with an unusual aspect, plus modern-style wines and local beers”. It “prides itself on being sustainable and using local suppliers where possible”, and is “well worth the trip if you don’t live nearby” or are visiting the nearby Turner Contemporary.
Summary
“Very dinky” it may be, but Lee Coad & Charlotte Forsdike’s relatively new café-style restaurant is “just brilliant” in all other aspects; “the food is fantastic, delicious and characterful” (focusing on the “freshest fish ever”), and the location makes it “handy if visiting Turner Contemporary”… in fact, the “only complaint is it's so popular it’s hard to get a table!”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
