For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
“Amazing views of Lyme Bay” (“especially if there’s a wild sea”) help set an upbeat tone at Mark Hix’s “beautiful” cliff-top venture, and “it feels like an occasion to dine here”. Nowadays renowned as one of the best restaurants in the south west, the place can seem “a touch self-absorbed”, or “expensive” but is “generally up-to-scratch,” and a typical report describes “a wide range of fresh, locally caught fish, well cooked and served up beautifully”. “I expected a lazy star name rip off, but came away thoroughly enjoying myself!”
“Such a beautiful setting looking over the harbour in this candlelit room” helps inspire many rapturous reviews for Mark Hix’s cliff-top venture, which at its best delivers “sparklingly fresh and simple fish and seafood”; and “a great choice of indigenous drinks (Dorset sparkling wine, local apple brandy)” too. Even some who say “it’s a great spot” fear “it has become a little complacent” however, and one or two reports were of “dull and un-special” cooking this year.
“The most awesome views” over Lyme Bay reward a trip to Mark Hix’s “beautifully located” cliff-top venture. “It’s not the cheapest”, but while to a few critics the fish and seafood is “a bit low on wow-factor”, to most who have made the pilgrimage it’s as “stunning” as the “beautiful location”.
Hix Oyster & Fish House Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Wonderful location, happy service but somewhat dull menu choices. Why little local Dorset fish rather than seafood bought up all the way from west Cornwall!"
"Outstanding fish menu in great location."
