“We always come here when in London, as it’s such an atmospheric venue in a fantastic location” – St Martin-in-the-Fields has a superb, brick-vaulted crypt and its self-service cafeteria provides an unusually affordable option in this prime area. It’s variable though – hit lucky and you can have “a good value, very casual meal, if from a limited menu”; but one or two reports this year noted “real disappointment with the food offering”.

A “long-established cafeteria” in the beautiful, brick-vaulted crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields that’s a useful venue for daytime and pre-theatre refuelling – “cheap and tasty and near the National Gallery”. In summer, they open a ‘Café in the Courtyard’, too.

Tucked away in the crypt beneath St Martin-in-the-Fields, this “handy” self-service cafeteria occupies a “fantastic space which always feels welcoming” and its no-frills soups, salads and hot plates are just the job for a “quick bite and coffee/glass of wine” when you visit the National Gallery across the road.

For a “relaxed” bite in the West End, remember the charming “self-service” crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields. It’s basic scoff (soups, salads, daily hot dishes), but quick, well-priced, of decent quality and the setting is very characterful.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
