“A hidden gem in the back streets of Bloomsbury” – this traditional chippie has been owned and run by the Beauchamp family for the best part of 50 years, and excels for its “exceptionally good grilled fish” and “super-generous portions” of “normal fish ’n’ chips”.

“Follow the black cabs and grab the battered goodies at this venerable chipper”, say fans of this Bloomsbury fixture, run by the Beauchamp family since 1977. “The place has been spruced up since my first visit decades ago, but it still could do with more sprucing up! But these are small criticisms and one doesn’t go for the décor, but for what’s on the plate”. “Friendly and well-informed service is a bonus, too”.

This Bloomsbury chippy with “very high standards” has been run by the Beauchamp family for 45 years, and is listed on the ‘Knowledge’ test required to be a London black cab driver. Ten varieties of fresh fish are delivered every morning, and there’s a good choice of traditional English puddings. “The ambience is a bit dated and it can be a tourist trap – but on a Friday lunchtime you can’t beat this place”.

“The real deal!” This “popular” Bloomsbury chippy – “run by the same family for more than 40 years” – is one of the best in town, certainly of those within striking distance of the West End. “The choice is always good, and simply grilled is a fantastic option”, or fried in matzo meal; and you can round off with “excellent English puddings and custard”. It’s a good idea to book.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
