“The vegan sushi is a work of art” at this outlet in the basement of Fenwick’s department store in Mayfair from Alexis Gauthier (the French fine-dining-chef-turned-evangelist for plant-based eating). He has raided global cuisines for his concoctions – “the vegan burgers are gorgeous” – but it’s the Japanese specials which elicit the most feedback, including “all-you-can-eat sushi” (in two hours).

“The basement of a department store doesn’t lend itself to high ambience”, but “half the fun of this place is the window shopping on the way in!” From Alexis Gauthier’s “interesting all-vegan selection”, the “amazingly crafted” sushi “looks amazing” and “is an engaging experience that comes close to ‘the real thing’ by look and taste”. Fans say items like the vegan burgers “are also terrific”, although there are also sceptics who find these other options “less convincing”. But in summer, “any shortcomings are more than made up for by the brilliant outside location, with a large paved terrace abutting Bond street, where you could be in Cannes under the large umbrellas as you watch the fancy shopping bags and their owners wandering by”.

“Outstanding fast-casual vegan food” has won instant acclaim for star Gallic chef and vegan pioneer, Alexis Gauthier’s latest venture – a “super-friendly” vegan cafeteria that’s part of Fenwick in Mayfair – which opened in April 2021, first on their pavement terrace, and then also in the basement. It serves simple staples (salads, burgers) alongside a slightly more ambitious prix-fixe menu and sushi from a dedicated counter: “although it’s entirely vegan, frankly, you would not realise it: the flavours he gets from vegetables are amazing!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
