The most comprehensive wine list of any restaurant in Europe (nearly 7,000 lines available).
Harden's survey result
Summary
“The views over the park make for a magical setting” at this luxurious venue near Green Park station, where the kitchen is overseen by star chef Ollie Dabbous. Under the same ownership as famous merchants, Hedonism Wines, it shares their “spectacular list” (“by obsessives for obsessives”… and “with some surprising pockets of value nestling in its more obscure reaches” if you look hard enough). Hitherto, it traded as two distinct entities with ‘Hide Below’ a place for a “high level breakfast” or informal luxe-brasserie meal any time of day; and ‘Hide Above’ reserved for Ollie’s “innovative” tasting menus – “terrific” but “don’t mention the price… they’re definitely not for everyday dining!” In mid-2023, though, they announced a change of direction – the same combined offering with the main features from both spaces will now be available on either floor: so you can now have breakfast with the same leafy vistas previously reserved for diners in ‘Above’ (or, tuck into the full, blow-out luxury menu while seated ‘Below’).
Summary
“There can be fewer better outlooks in London than the view over Green Park from the first-floor windows” of this beautifully appointed, modern Mayfair dining room. Overseen by Ollie Dabbous, the kitchen achieves “phenomenal flavour combinations and presentation” and “exceptional” overall results (“one of my best meals in London, maybe in life…”). And the “extraordinary wine list” is perhaps even more impressive: you can order any vintage from the acclaimed list sold by Hedonism Wines (who are under the same ownership), “or you can opt for the unusual and interesting wine pairings”. But “any temptation to choose a nice bottle can be financially crippling!” – “when the final bill comes, it’s a good job that you’re already sitting down…”.
Summary
“A wonderful situation opposite Green Park” with “marvellous views” adds to the high lustre of this luxuriously spacious first-floor venue, found up a beautifully carved wooden staircase from the cheaper ‘Hide Ground’ below. As you might expect of somewhere under common ownership with the well-known Hedonism Wines, it boasts an “incredible wine selection”, which is set off to good effect by Ollie Dabbous’s “exceptional and innovative” cuisine, boasting “unique dishes and combinations that you won't find elsewhere”. And “the great care and professionalism of the warm and welcoming staff” is mentioned in numerous reports, too. You can guess the catch! – if you are counting the pennies, cross the street to avoid the place (and its harshest critics find it “so overpriced”). By most accounts, though, “the whole experience is absolutely phenomenal!”.
Summary
“An extraordinary restaurant for an extraordinary occasion!” – Up the “beautiful staircase” accessed through Hide Ground (see also), “no expense has been spared in the creation of this exquisite restaurant”, and the “cool” and incredibly spacious first-floor dining room of this Russian-owned yearling provides an impressively luxurious backdrop, “especially if you bag one of the tables facing Green Park”. You can choose from either the six-course or nine-course tasting menu, which comes with a vegetarian alternative (and a shorter, “more affordable” option at lunch) and there’s the “astonishing complement” of “nearby Hedonism Wines’ incomparable 6,000-strong list, as they will run your preferred bottle over if it’s not in the restaurant’s own cellar”. When it comes to Ollie Dabbous’s Scandi-inspired cooking, most reporters feel that “thankfully the food lives up to the posh surroundings”, delivering “precise, light and intriguing” cuisine that’s a “worthy successor to Dabbous”. “Impeccable”, “helpful” and “charming” service adds further to the mood. “OMG it’s oligarch prices” though, leaving doubters – who also feel some plates are a tad “over-engineered” – to conclude that “the biggest impression it leaves is the dent in your wallet!”
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
