“Top local gastropub” in an Olympia backstreet that’s “better run” nowadays than during its original heyday, and after more than 20 years still “always delivers” a “well thought-out menu”; and can be surprisingly “buzzing and hectic” for such a tranquil location.

This backstreet Olympia gastropub is not the major destination it once was, but locals agree it’s still “at the top after all these years”. “They produce different menus morning and evening, seven days a week – the cooking is imaginative, tasty and reliably so”. “Amazing that they still maintain the unpretentious, high-quality food at such reasonable prices.”

“One of the top gastropubs around” – this backstreet Olympia hotspot is “past its best” according to some age old aficionados, but “the crowds don’t seem to have noticed” as its “buzzing every evening and for Sunday lunch”; “steak is a highlight” of an “interesting” menu.

This Olympia backstreet gastro-boozer isn’t the stand-out it once was, but it’s still an “eternally reliable” haunt – “an uncomplicated, warming experience” that’s “buzzing every week night”. A recent refurb “has added table reservations, and the food continues good”. Top Menu Tip – “their excellent staple: bavette steak”.

Have you eaten at The Havelock Tavern?

Owner's description

Opened in 1996 the Havelock Tavern is one of London's original gastro pubs. Unlike many others that have come and gone since, we have changed very little over that time. Rather than become a restaurant in an old pub building, we focus on being a pub that serves really good food. The atmosphere is lively and informal so that anyone can eat, drink and feel at home. We now take bookings for a limited area of the pub.  We are not trying to be sophisticated, but aim to provide you with a good, relaxing time.

Our customers are a good mix of locals and others who have made the journey to spend an afternoon or evening with us. You are just as likely to see a table of mates catching up over a few pints as a couple tucking in to three courses. We don't have any music playing, so the sounds and atmosphere are provided by our guests.

"11 years on and I still love this pub. A limited menu that changes twice per day, but you can always rely on the steak, whether bavette or onlget or flat iron, etc. Great food, lovely atmosphere and thankfully they've pulled back a little on the pricing (2019 saw a big increase, which we complained about)."
