In Brixton Village market, Nicholas Balfe’s interesting spot is worth discovering, with its downstairs bar (snacks and sharing dishes) and upstairs dining room (a set menu of either four or seven courses). “Passionate and knowledgeable staff deliver lovely food and some really interesting and unusual wines.”

“Ambitious modern British cuisine” – an “interesting” menu of “trendy but unfussy dishes that are well-prepared” – plus a good list of natural wines win consistent high praise for Nicholas Balfe’s “buzzy spot in Brixton market”, although “it can get a bit manic”. The team has opened a second venue, Levan in Peckham (see also).

“Capable and unshowy modern British cooking, using all sorts of influences” (plus de rigeur pickling and preserving) from a “very seasonal”, if “limited” menu scores the highest praise for Nicholas Balfe’s “fun” and “buzzy” fixture in Brixton Market – “one of those places where you want to eat everything on the menu” and with “a (mostly natural) wine list that’s interesting, too”. Top Tip: “superb vegetarian dishes”. Balfe and his team are opening a bistro, Levan, in Peckham in October 2018.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
