Originally closed to the public when it opened 20 years ago, Norman Foster’s ‘Gherkin’ – arguably the most iconic of the City’s modern towers – now has a dining room run by catering company Searcy’s on its 40th floor, which is “just so wonderful, with a glass-roofed bar and wall-to-wall windows in both bar and restaurant”“it’s my ‘go-to’ when l visit London for an excellent meal, first-class presentation, attentive staff, and all at a reasonable price. Win, win, win all round”.

“The wow factor” of its “remarkable views by day or night” helps make this “fun and busy” space – the top three stories of this landmark City tower (originally restricted to those working in the Gherkin, now open to the public) – a “good choice for a special occasion”. The catering has its fans too, although critiques include that it can be “ordinary” or “very expensive”. Top Tip – “good set menu”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
