“Authentically fiery dishes” light up the menu at this City Road restaurant where head chef Zhang Xiao Zhong hails from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan – a third-generation chef, his grandfather was personal chef to Deng Xiaoping, China’s leader through the 1980s.

This “cracking Sichuanese restaurant on the unglamorous and busy City Road” (near the Honourable Artillery Company) is “not for the chilli-hater!” “Go for the authentic and freshly cooked regional specialities” from chef Zhang Xiao Zhong, whose grandfather was personal chef to Sichuan-born Deng Xiaoping, Chairman Mao’s successor as China’s leader.

The famously mouth-numbing tastes of southwest China are celebrated at this “great value” joint between Barbican and the City. Chef Zhang Xiao Zhong (ex-Bar Shu and Hutong) is from Chengdu, the home of Sichuan cooking, and his grandfather was personal chef to Sichuan-born Deng Xiaoping, China’s supreme leader in the 1980s.

“Delicious dumplings” and other “fine” dishes from southwestern China make this nondescript looking four-year-old “a real find on the western edge of the City, near Bunhill Fields”. “I even ate their tofu with great enjoyment, which was a revelation”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Busy place with a big post-work crowd. The food was great - super spicy. The bill had service on and they tried to add it again at payment time which was disappointing."
