Harden's says

First standalone restaurant from pitmaster and former DJ and vinyl dealer Man Hon Luk (“Hon”), whose Texan-Chinese barbecue pop-ups have developed an East London following. It takes over the grungily groovy 80-cover site in a canal-side warehouse above Crate that was formerly Silo (RIP). Texas-style BBQ is fused with Cantonese and broader Asian flavours, with smoked brisket, pork belly and beef cheeks served alongside rice, duck pancakes all with Chinese-inspired seasoning.

Not enough people have commented yet

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

Do you think it deserves to be better known?

Write a quick review now using our restaurant diary service. That way it might catch our attention. Next survey, you can transfer your diary entry into our survey system. Everyone who contributes 5 or more reviews in our survey will qualify for a free guide.

For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Sunday Times

Camilla Long found much to ridicule at what she called a “trendy elevated barbecue spot” overlooking “Hackney’s muckscape” – a “blistering caveman manspace” with a “huge, steel 500-gallon barbecue [that] sits like a priapic Stephenson’s Rocket at the entrance”, and shoddy service that failed to match the restaurant-level prices.

As for the Texas/Asian food, “I’m not going to pretend the tofu was OK,” she grumbled. “Five slices of cold, grey soy with chillies, coriander sprinkled over the top, swimming in some greasy tasteless linctus – it was like eating pressed dandruff.”

But some of the dishes, Camilla had to admit, were “outstanding”, including melting cubes of Taiwanese pork belly that were “wobblingly soft, like seared foie gras, pork flavour hovering like a mirage”; an “incredible brick of succulent short-rib beef that’s drenched and black with peppery Sichuan sauce”; and a terrific side of rice topped with beef dripping.
