Harden's says

Part of Stratford’s coming of age as a restaurant destination – and part of East London’s International Quarter development: this D&D Group launch occupies a new, sustainably constructed three-floor landmark – The Pavilion – within the Olympic Park. It has a sizeable 550 covers in all and comprises a ground floor deli plus large restaurant and ‘winter garden’ (sounds a bit llike Bluebird); plus a first floor dining room, also with terrae; and a rooftop bar with views of Stratford and the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Foodwise, it’s akin to The German Gymnasium – an Alpine theme with references to France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

You can’t miss this remarkable, oversized swiss-chalet-inspired structure run by D&D London, which sits on the fringes of the Olympic Park, a short walk from Westfield Stratford. Its roof terrace is a prime spot for drinks on a sunny day. When it comes to eating, the Alpine-inspired fodder (fondue, rösti, schnitzel…) inspires remarkably little feedback: such as we have is positive, but insufficient to safely repudiate some of the brickbats thrown at the place online. BREAKING NEWS. In September 2023, it was announced that Haugen will soon close, although a new occupant is being sought for this impressive site.

Spectacular design and proximity to Westfield Stratford are not enough to win this Alpine-themed D&D London property much in the way of feedback. Such as we received is downbeat (“disappointing… Schnitzel done badly”) and it’s hard to demur from Grace Dent’s damning assessment in her October 2021 review: a “huge, tourist-magnet restaurant”“utterly hampered by someone’s desperate need to make profit”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
