1. Haugen Swiss restaurant in Stratford 5 Westfield Avenue - E20
Part of Stratford’s coming of age as a restaurant destination – and part of East London’s International Quarter development: this D&D Group launch occupies a new, sustainably constructed three-floor landmark – The Pavilion – within the Olympic Park. It has a sizeable 550 covers in all and comprises a ground floor deli plus large restaurant and ‘winter garden’ (sounds a bit llike Bluebird); plus a first floor dining room, also with terrae; and a rooftop bar with views of Stratford and the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Foodwise, it’s akin to The German Gymnasium – an Alpine theme with references to France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
2. Bird Stratford Chicken restaurant in Stratford Westfield Stratford, Montfichet Road - E20
2017 Review: “You get exactly what you’d expect – tasty chicken, nothing more!” – at this “fun fried-chicken place” in Shoreditch (now with branches in Islington, Camden and Westfield). “The beer on hand isn’t bad, either…”
3. Darkhorse British, Modern restaurant in Stratford 16-19 Victory Parade, East Village - E20
Founded in late 2015 in the redeveloped Olympic athletes' village by Lee Glen and Ian Goodman.
4. Allegra British, Modern restaurant in Stratford The Stratford, 20-22 International Way - E20
Ex-Chiltern Firehouse head chef Patrick Powell’s first solo venture, on the seventh floor of Stratford’s new Manhattan Loft Gardens building, opened too late for any reports in our survey. Powell’s dedication to sustainability has extended to buying Kent farmland to provide Allegra with local ingredients.
5. The Stratford Brasserie British, Modern restaurant in Stratford The Stratford, 20-22 International Way - E20
One of two restaurants in the new Stratford Manhattan Lofts hotel, The Stratford Brasserie is overseen by chef Ben Harrington, previously with Soho House Group. See also Allegra (from ex-Chiltern Firehouse chef Patrick Powell).
6. The Gantry restaurant in Stratford 40 Celebration Avenue - E15
A 17-storey Hilton Curio Hotel, with what's billed as a speakeasy bar in the basement and promising a "destination restaurant" on the first floor with two outdoor terraces; opening in 2021.
7. Figo Italian restaurant in Stratford 17 Endeavour Square, Westfield Avenue - E20
By the Stratford entrance to the Olympic park, this all-day Italian restaurant and café arrived in autumn 2019 and has since spawned a couple of Essex-based spin-offs. The space – with big windows – is modern, but the food is traditional: anancini, pasta, pizza from the oven…
