For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.

Summary

It’s “onwards and upwards” for this country house hotel, in a “lovely location, handy for the Hay Festival”, and long of note for its “old-hall decadence”; Nick Brodie’s “exquisite” cuisine won extremely consistent praise this year: “worth every penny!”

Summary

A “beautiful” Wye Valley setting and “wonderful dining room” help create the “romantic” ambience at this well-known country house hotel – “a special place, offering fare served in a style long gone elsewhere”. Nick Brodie’s “arty” dishes took some flak for “style over substance”, but most reporters think his food is “fabulous”.

Summary

Nick Brodie’s “exceptional” cuisine won the highest ratings in Wales this year for this “lovely” and “romantic” country house hotel, with its “marvellous” setting in the Wye Valley. A niggle? – service strikes some reporters as “Dickensian in attitude” (ie “a bit intimidating”), but perhaps the spring 2015 arrival of new manager Bruno Asselin will improve matters?

Summary

“Wonderful” food and a “real sense of occasion” reward many of the reporters who seek out this “romantic” country house hotel; “very ambitious pricing”, though, undercuts support on a number of fronts.

Private dining

If you want a luxury experience to savour with fine food and surroundings to match then private dining can be arranged in any of our exquisite dining rooms.

The Whistler Room offers a wonderfully unique setting, and takes its name from the original collection of Whistler drawings adorning the walls. It is perfect for small dinner parties, as is The Garden Room with its glass-domed ceiling. The Orangery is ideal for larger events and celebrations, while the Library, with its gentleman’s club feel, is a great setting. What’s more, it offers sweeping views across the Black Mountains.

"Sadly dissapointing. Such a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful hotel, elegant dining and lounge areas with gallery standard art collection. They only offer a fixed price tasting menu, to get any substitution involves arguing with waiting staff about whether you notified the hotel ahead of any allergies. Any substitution was called ‘Chefs Choice’ sadly customers choice did not come into it. The food was lovely, but ended up eating an unwanted tasting menu with food that I don’t particularly enjoy. There wasn’t even the option to have cheese. On arrival repeatedly asked name and room number, very expensive drinks. Red wine served in the white wine glasses one night, drinks menu badly stained, after dinner Lounge still had pre dinner glasses and Canapé plates on all the tables."
