Harden's survey result
“You can feel the influence of Fergus Henderson” on Tom Hunter’s cuisine at this cavernous and carnivorous venue – also home to a small cinema – serving up “very tasty and interesting pub food and good real ales to go with it”. “The ambience is determinedly dressed down, which appeals to its clientele”, but it’s “far better than its unassuming façade suggests”.
This sprawling bar and dining venue – a favourite of critic Marina O’Loughlin, apparently – serves “exceptional food” from a “varied specials menu”, including “home-cured bacon and black pudding” from the on-site charcuterie curing room. It also has its own small cinema, where you might eat ramen while watching ‘Tampopo’!
“What a surprise” – “buzzing” bar below, “perfect pub dining” upstairs, with a “varied menu” (“combinations I would not have thought possible”), incorporating home-cured charcuterie as a highlight. “All this and a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil and you cannot possibly go wrong”.
“Hearty fare” – “simple ingredients, well-prepared from a menu full of good ideas”, including “good, home-produced charcuterie” – plus “always-interesting beers and wines” and “friendly” staff win praise for this tucked-away but “very busy” boozer.
