Ex-Nathan Outlaw chef Thomas Carr opened this, his first solo restaurant, in 2015. He expanded his brand with a seafood and grill restauarant, also in Ilfracombe, in 2018.
Harden's survey result
Chef Thomas Carr is “exceptionally talented”, turning out “perfectly balanced” fish-centric food which “honours the ingredients” at this North Devon five-year-old, boosted last year by a paean from Jay Rayner. Ilfracombe is “a truly tough environment for a high-end restaurant, especially to survive year-round, so hats off to the chef and team”.
“An inspiring young chef who has a real talent with fish – never spoiling the delicate flesh of the fish itself and always accompanying the dish with exciting tasty morsels or fabulously delicate sauces” – wins high praise from the few who have visited this offbeat but competitively priced North Devon four-year-old. Its profile was helped this year by a rave review from Jay Rayner. (In February 2018, after a crowdfunding drive, Carr took over the town’s Lamb Hotel, converting it into the ‘Thomas Carr Seafood and Grill’.)
